XP-Utilities provides a suite of features to optimize your computer and easily alter Windows XP settings, but it s not an ideal tool for novice users.

The basic interface displays large icons representing each optimization tool, though you also can access each tool via the Back and Forward buttons. Like other tweaking programs, this one helps you change the look and behavior of your Windows XP. You easily can disable desktop icons, wallpaper, and Start Menu options. Altering Windows log-in behavior is easier through this utility. A RAM booster is included to free extra memory, although we found no dramatic increase in our computer s speed. The application s privacy tool quickly clears traces from common Windows system areas and Web-surfing histories, but neglects all browsers save Internet Explorer. It also lacks a secure file-shredding tool for erasing confidential traces. A simple password protection feature makes it easy to protect your settings.

However, XP-Utilities lacks a very important settings backup tool to enable users to test changes without fear. Testers should note this application doesn t include an uninstaller or add an entry to Windows Add/Remove Programs. Novices should stay clear of this application, as a greatly needed help file is missing and many setting changes could damage desktop usability. With its comprehensive approach, we think this utility is best geared toward administrators and computer technicians.
