Ashampoo FireWall Free is an easy-to-use program that lets users to their computers from unwanted connections to the Internet. Though it may not be the most robust firewall available, it s a great choice for novice users who know they want protection but aren t sure how a firewall should be configured.

The program s interface is sleek and intuitive, with its functions neatly organized in tabs. Users don t have to do much to configure the program initially; it will automatically notify users when an application attempts to connect to the Internet and ask whether users want to allow this action. Users can also go into the program and manually add rules for various programs. All the basic functions were intuitive and worked well, and the built-in Help file, while a little awkward in style, provides a good overview of the program s features and how to use them. In addition to allowing users to define connection rules for applications, the program lets users view connection statistics and logs of connection activity. The program contains an Internet Cleaner feature that allows users to erase evidence of their Internet activity, although we re not sure this is anything a user couldn t do from within their browser. Overall, we found the program to be a simple way for users to add a basic level of protection to their computers.

This freeware installs without issues but does leave files behind upon removal. We recommend this program to novice and intermediate users who want the protection of a firewall without a lot of hassle.

Using the Swiss knife approach, this suite of tools makes a valiant effort to keep your PC healthy, but its not without a few headaches.

PC Health Optimizer s button menu and submenu interface is nothing new, and actually wastes time and space. The 21 functions easily could fit on a single menu interface. The same approach makes reading the manual tedious. A single paragraph of needed information takes three clicks to reach in a sub-submenu. The general impression of this suite is delayed speed. Once you finally get to a function, they operate quickly. Some too quickly, as our testers complained that some information screens opened for less than a second, then returned to the main interface. All of the standard functions of this genre are included, but some functions straddle the line between useful and irritating. Removing junk files and unneeded Registry entries take users just a couple of clicks to accomplish. However, expected controls such as select or deselect all buttons and window resize controls to see full path and entry information are missing. The suite s privacy, administration, file utility, and backup functions follow the same path of program speed combined with interface irritants.

It takes little user experience to operate PC Health Optimizer. However, some functions require at least an intermediate understanding of the Windows Registry. The 15-day demo requires that users click through a purchase reminder before using any function. That, combined with the other annoyances of this program, may send busy users searching for a less-segmented approach to PC maintenance.

Though this antispyware scanner has a limited database of malware (about 450 items), it did a decent job of stopping and finding intruders in our tests. The real-time protection managed to stop all adware trying to install. However, the small database told on scan results so that Free Spyware Scanner missed several malware executables and DLLs (for instance, WebHancer and MultiDropper). The program offers several tools for immunizing your PC against malware (an ActiveX shield, for instance) or repairing your browser and system settings after removing adware (for example, fixing LSP). Free Spyware Scanner s tree interface is not very handy for viewing and sorting large lists of found items. The software won t excite much attention, considering the number of quality free anti-spyware tools.
