Surfing the Web today without protection against spyware and other pests is like stepping into a downpour without an umbrella. Unfortunately, this particular shield is more like a holey umbrella, and isn t really useful. Like many other programs, it scans files, start-up entries, and the Registry for signs of known malicious software or “malware.” It also looks for P2P applications, a particularly helpful feature on shared computers. However, in our tests, it missed several pieces of adware that are rated as severe threats, and it did not even delete the malware it did find. Moreover, the interface may be too complicated for many users. Given the wide variety of free tools available online, we d advise most computer users to look elsewhere.
